A Few Perfect Things

An 8 oz. can of Coca-Cola, maybe over chubby clinky ice with a squeeze of lemon. The Writer's Almanac Fresh flour tortillas, turned twice in a cast-iron skillet to a crispy slighty puffed texture, gobbled down with butter and salt. I had my haircut with the tiny, perfectly delightful and tiger-striped Freda(who also belly-dances). It is a very good and dignified haircut, shorter than usual but still within walking distance of the shoulders. Welcome to the weekend, Darlings. Tell me what you are doing .

Thursday and Past my Bedtime

The other things breadsticks are good for: gesturing in conversation or conducting the sidewalk buskers Latest excitement: getting a haircut tomorrow. Walking around impersonating a Lhasa Ahpso cannot continue, especially with imminent interviews. Latest Bad habit: Now that we have a dining table to stare adoringly at each other over dinner, I have found myself deliberating sabotaging my own table manners to gross Steven out, like allowing a corner of lettuce hang off one lip for ages. Juvenile. And wrong. Things that I Will Ban when I am Queen: Car Alarms. Grocery Membership cards. Plastic hardshell packaging. Hero: Eloise, who lives at the Plaza. Latest Raging Success: The Brioche knitting stitch. And after only 20 tries too! Se cret Passion: Hats , but nothing unamusing or without a brim What I Did Not Know About Mister T: everything

Ode to Yeoh

I am hanging onto my pants to see Memoirs of a Geisha, although I am sad Spielberg passed on the option to direct. Oh, Ziyi is charming, but she cannot hold a candle to the all out best damn superhero girl on the planet: Michelle Yeoh. (I am still trying to forget she was a bond girl, although she was the least squealish, most action packed bond girl ever.) ooo, Pretty! Seems that the Wikipedia entry for Memoirs is under heavy dispute for neutrality. Interesting, but not suprising seeing as everytime anyone whispers the word "Geisha", a couple million people honk " Ya mean hookers ?" The answer to which is "No, Pal, we mean geisha." The actual person and former geisha Golden based his fictional story on, Mineko Iwasaki, successfully sued Golden for defamation and breach of contract and went on to publish her own memoir which is better than the novel. Some of Golden's whole analogy sequences in female conversation got a bit stomach-turning, as if two w...

Today, I am not the receptionist

Joy! Oh Joy! Joy! The new Winter Knitty is out ! And guess what I’ll make first! Street Wars : a city-wide 24/7 watergun assassination game, now all around San Francisco. Wow! How much fun can a person have? Steven's latest fetish: Straus Maple Whole Milk Yogurt. It is nothing short of divine: creamy, sweet, tangy. I bought three quarts two days ago and it looks like I'll be headed back to the store again today. I am contemplating putting the stuff through the ice cream maker, just for kicks and giggles. *update on Steven: He admits I will never get the heel of the loaf. Ever. oh, and he's not sorry about it either.* Today I got my first recruiter call; unfortunately, they wanted me to fill a receptionist position in an architecture firm. I just couldn't quite stomach the idea of dressing up to work for another imperialist ass-grabber or some evil dried up old bat with Diva sensibilities. Not after working with the Glorious Kim and all those lovely people at FHCRC. My...

Hi Bloody Ho, it's Monday Morning

It's morning. It's California. I am already wearing sunglasses, indoors and in the darkest corner of the living room. Once again bracing for the weekly task of finding employment. Favorite Quote: "It is difficult to produce a television documentary that is both incisive and probing when every twelve minutes one is interrupted by dancing rabbits singing about toilet paper." - Rod Serling Hideously Addicted To : Popsugar , celebrity news and gossip blog. How sad is that? Happy Accident: Yesterday I was dragged off the the Kabuki Springs Spa for some quality scrubby naked alone time. When I stepped out of the car, I practically tripped over a ladies' wallet sitting there right in the middle of the Geary street sidewalk, entirely intact. I took it to the front desk and found that belonged to the spa scheduler. As a reward, Kabuki Springs let me in for free. Rah! Still at odds with the Stoned Madwoman of Chaillot Downstairs; have not seen or heard from her since the ...

A Marvelous Dark Friday Night on Hayes Street

Image
Absinthe Restaurant and Bar 398 Hayes St. San Francisco, CA Steven took me here two years ago when I insisted that I WAS going to drink Absinthe, damn, it, despite his hearty objections. So we went and I had my odd little green drink and its weird little ritual and S. had a bowl of the most life-altering astounding Chanterelle mushroom risotto ever created with tiny chunks of mysterious silky fat floating in it. Magic in a bowl, served with a massive spoon. So. Now that we live here: we figured that we would have to go again and that Friday Night in the City seemed a good enough occasion. (Alas, no risotto on the menu this time.) The place is always filled with the well heeled, slighty overly groomed crowd. A lady who looked an awful lot like Ms. Madeline Albright was at the next table on a date. I hope it was her; she looked happy. I do adore Maddie. (And she knits, ya know.) As you can see by the photo, Absinthe has very sympathetic low lights and sexy glossy dark red paint on th...

Crazy Lady That is Not Me. This Time.

The utterly mad perpetually stoned out landlady is getting on my nerves. I will not answer her calls to help pull her out of bed at 6:00 AM or go outside downstairs in the dark and wet at 10:55 PM to corral her dog in the house. Ungracious as it sounds, she does manage to get up out of bed and eventually the dog goes inside. The constant pestering for handyman type chores (and if I say no five times, you can be sure I pretty much mean it), the offer of half-spoiled food out of her fridge, her incredibly filthy house, her unwillingness to remember anything I explain to her in regard to the internet or her computer....constant constant demands. I am on the verge of throwing the emergency ladder out of the garret window (yes, I have my own personal garret) and scrambling out of the house via the alley so that I will not be perpetually ambushed by her AOL questions every time I leave or enter the building. So S & I spent the morning drilling holes in the side of her house to thread he...
