Spin, spin, spin

I now have a very swell Ashford Traveller assembled and oiled. The gorgeous grain is asserting itself, but I can live with it right now. Those New Zealanders have some sense of humor, providing purely visual and sometimes utterly inscrutible instructions. A couple scotches and a bit of cursing and it was together. A week later oiled and now she's zooming like hell. My mother is now officially retired! Yesterday she was feted and fed and had all her favorite people around her, She has had her first pedicure and bought (okay: exchanged) the first extravagance I can recall.. Aside from that, I won't go into it any further except to say everything's fine (Although I have not ruled out a cream pie summit.) Therein lies this no-so-blind item: Buddy? You can make it up to me. One word: pencils. Thank you and goodnight.

8 AM Saturday Morning - Homicidal

Image
Dear Mother of Pete. The (formerly) Cool Neighbors to the south have broken out the jackhammers at 8 AM. My house? The Wall of Sound and not very nice sound at that. Working on my Ravelry page today. Today I was supposed to do some hanging out with Mum but plans have changed and she stayin' in the 'Gatos Burbs. Meanwhile, back in the Urban Jungle I have been requested (yet again) to bring the Cheese Sticks of Doom to Mum's retirement party tomorrow. That and Dorrie Greenspan's World Peace Cookies so I will do that this morning. I am so glad my family has a use for me but if it require butter, cheddar and cocoa so much the better. I have found my shooting range silencers. They go very well with the bathrobe and the scowl.

Hogwash

The words "official mourning": hogwash. No such thing. Other than I started to attempt mascara after two weeks. Mixed results at best. Heather did not have a lot of special gifts, no odd or surprising brilliant talents. Before Zoloft and Special Olympics she was angry, withdrawn and difficult to live with. The tantrums could be used to set a watch and God help you if you sat in her chair or used her coffee mug. What happens when you watch your siblings and friends outgrow you and you are left behind? But I have to say the last two years have been worth moving back for. I thought it would be for Mum and Da , who are now marching through the later years, but instead it's what I did not realize and the last thing we could have expected. The very best part was being with Mum during the Special Olympics track practices watching Heather flirt outrageously with her boyfriend Ruben and Mum would twist her hands and make some very uncomfortable nervous noises and I could lean o...

Work is Hard

I don't like people, noise, light, heat, cold, due dates or food. I especially don't like being hugged at work, even by the most adorable of researchers. You would not believe how behind I am and how many email I plan of simply disregarding. Am just thinking about quitting and abandoning it all. Thankfully all the big hoodads have been in retreat most of this week, but I hope the attention will not be stored up and dumped on me today. "Wawawa so sorry wawawaanything I canwawawa. By the way, you must have time for This!!!wawawa". Maybe I have reached the anger stage already. fuck! Last night I finished the longways scarf I started for Heather eight days ago with wool I spun myself, all kinds of shade of pink and purple and a little gray to sync it all together. It's a lumpy bumpy rustic thing but I think it's charming. Seeing as the intended owner is now deceased, I am going to hang onto it for a little while. Maybe I will wake up from this bad dream, like Mom...

Back

I am wrapping up the official mourning, five more mid day naps should do it, if the tree surgeons across the street ever finish. I promise to be writing again about things other than despair and my sweetly odd sister because sitting in this can of wretchedness has got to become an internal dialog not just an exterior display of raw emotion. Today I could not find the energy to go to work and have instead spent the morning on College Avenue cleaning up my fingers and toes, checking mail, eating breakfast as the world walked by and buying thank you cards as well as emergency sympathy cards. Until this point, I have thought sympathy cards to be a bit bullshit, probably because I never knew what to say. Now that opinion is reversed and any show of sympathy is a good thing even when you haven't any idea what to say. I love the fact that letterpress is making a comeback and original art is being created for it. When I see that Hallmark cards are $4.00 ("$$! *&^#@?!"), I a...

For those who asked: the Eulogy

Heather bloomed this decade. Growing up a year ahead of her, I have seen her all sides of Heather and these last years have been a most joyous, successful and happy time for her. In Special Olympics or when celebrating something with her friends and family she was vivacious and free and delightful, the person she was too shy to display to all people at all times. There was great emotion and feeling under her reserve , and what she might not be able to express was still there. We knew that we had to ask about brushing her teeth, that she wanted us to ask. That as long as I have known her she has said goodnight at the same time in the same words, both of us knowing that this exchange means love and trust. With her guidance I fully understand that Food is a marvelous thing, Friends are for hugging, and Public transportation provides a measure of freedom and is a very good thing indeed. We should always have someone fluffy in our lives. Purple should be worn with great aplomb and often, A...

Better with time or dulled with alcohol?

Oh, boy. The Catholic Memorial service was held this morning. We expected maybe 40 people and got about 275, with huge outpouring of Special Olympic participants and coaches. It was unexpectedly wonderful and I got the great honor of introducing them all around to my family who has not met them and got to thank them all and tell them how wonderful they are. Most heart-wrenching was Ruben, who could be called my sister's boyfriend; they were very similar in ability and I think they were great friends with huge unapologetic affection. At the service what he said was so simple and heartfelt and he wept and prayed and really choked my dad up. He gave my mother a little shell bracelet he made for her. Lots of people wore purple in Heather's honor. Scott, Mark and I all gave eulogies. I pinched Mark just as he was trying to start and he announced it to the congregation as: "Mooooom...Heidi's pinching meeeeeeee." I am nearly 40 years old and cannot restrain myself from s...
